The Washburn near Harrogate is a 3.5k dam release river, grade 2 with a lovely bit of 3 thrown in for good measure.
It was a fine summers day and the river was very popular. The river as you would expect is very fast flowing with lots of little eddies to hide in. Jonny Bennett our river guide had organised the trip, very kind of you sir, and we had all camped the night previous. Party of five on the river, myself, Mark and Ross, with Dave Walker as our experienced paddler of the group keeping an every watchful eye, not to forget Hayley, official photographer and shuttle run driver.
We had great fun eddie hopping at the top of the river and a path running along side to make our way back up. There were a few swims and a few successful rolls. The river is quick all the way and the crowds start to thin out about the third of the way down.
We gathered at the mid section to tackle the four foot drop one at a time, big thanks to Dave Walker on the safety line. All made it down, some more successfully than others. After a quick rescue of my boat the others enjoyed the rest of the river.
A lovely bit of white water to paddle and I look forward to heading back up the soon.
Many thanks to everyone who made it a very special weekend.
